What to Consider When Buying Fog Lights

Traditional driving lights make it possible to see at night, but they only work well when weather conditions are ideal. In rain, fog, or snow, the driving lights become much less effective because the light reflects off the small water particles in the air. This reduces the viewing distance for the driver, which is why it is so important to have functioning fog lights.


Understanding Fog Lights and Colour Options

The colour and distribution of fog lights control the effectiveness of the lights. Traditional driving lights direct beams directly in front so drivers can see farther ahead. The forward direction of the beam causes light to reflect off particles in the air. Fog lights have a wider beam that disperses light in multiple directions to reduce the amount of reflection. Although front fog lights come in several colours, many consumers believe yellow fog lights reflect the least amount of light and do the best job. However, the colour of fog lights still remains a matter of preference, as the theory is not a proven fact.


LED Fog Lights

Shoppers have a variety of bulb choices when choosing fog lights. LED fog lights lack the traditional filaments found in standard bulbs and are one of the most durable options. They last longer because vibrations do not damage them, and they use less energy and produce less heat. The only drawback to LED lights is the higher cost.


HID Fog Lights

HID, or high intensity discharge, fog lights also lack filaments. Light occurs when an electrical charge ignites xenon gas in the casing. Two electrodes house the energised gas in between them and create a light that is very close to natural lighting. HID fog lights are around 70 per cent brighter than halogen lights, but they are more volatile than LED lights, and the cost is comparable.


Halogen Fog Lights

The budget shopper often chooses halogen fog lights. These lights get the job done but have the shortest lifespan and produce the least amount of light. Even so, they are more than capable of providing the appropriate level of illumination when driving in foggy conditions.


Fog Light Strength

Regardless of whether the lights are universal lights from alternative producers or from name brand manufacturers, fog lights vary in intensity and beam width. The most effective combination is a wide beam with a dim light to minimise reflection. In all instances, the beam needs to be wider than it is long to work effectively. Otherwise, the forward direction of the beam reflects off the water particles.
