So, what is a timing belt ?

Firstly, your engine's timing belt is the most important maintenance item on your vehicle ! The timing belt  is a ribbed belt linking the timing of your crank (bottom part of the engine) and camshaft (top part of the engine), making sure the cylinder head (valves) operates in time with the block (Pistons).  This is very important, if your timing belt where to snap or skip due to a worn tooth during engine operation, severe damage can be caused, possibly costings thousands of pounds to fix. The timing belt is more so important in the modern multi-valved engines of today's vehicles, know as high interference engines, where severe damage is inevitable in the event of timing belt failure. Failure can cause contact of the engine valves and pistons, usually requiring a complete engine rebuild.

Timing Belt Or Chain and When Should I Change it ?

These days there are 2 different ways of keeping an engine in time, a rubber timing belt, or the latest way, a metal timing chain. However be careful here, do not presume just because you have a modern vehicle you have a timing chain, many manufacturers such as the Volkswagen Audi Group, still use timing belts in their engine designs. To find out whether you have a belt or chain firstly consult your owners hand book, which should have a service schedule for the timing belt/chain, belt usually being called Toothed Belt. Another way to find out is to use the internet. Most answers can be found on Google, but there are also specific websites to help you find out whether you have a belt or chain, and the service schedule.  In our opinion the best of these websites is : mytimingbelt , which can easily be found on Google or any search engine.

How Much Does It Cost To Change My Timing Belt?

Timing belt services can be costly on some cars, ranging into the thousands. Labour costs also range into the hundreds. If you are handy with tools and do the work yourself, the parts cost for good quality components can be between £50-£250. It is also recommended to change the pulleys and tensioners at the same time as the belt to rule out any other failures. Why all the timing gear is off, it is also a good idea to change the water pump, if it is belt driven, to save money and time in the future.
