Energy saving light bulbs are safer for the environment and can help homeowners save money on electricity costs. Whether you're shopping for bulbs for lamps, torches, or ceiling lights, there are energy saving light bulbs that work just as well as traditional bulbs.

 

Energy Saving Bulbs Benefits

Energy efficient light bulbs provide several benefits, the most important being their environmental friendliness. By being more energy efficient than incandescent bulbs, fewer resources are consumed to power the bulbs, providing a less detrimental effect to the world. Using energy efficient bulbs benefits you as well because they last 10 to 25 times longer and save up to £80 over their lifetime.

 

ENERGY STAR Rating

Look for an ENERGY STAR rating on products to save energy. To qualify for an ENERGY STAR rating, the product must meet strict guidelines. ENERGY STAR rated bulbs must use less energy than a traditional incandescent light bulb to qualify for the rating. They must also produce significantly less heat, which can save energy on home cooling as well.

 

LED Light Bulbs

LED bulbs produce light through semiconductors that emit light when a current passes through them. These light emitting-diodes (LEDs) are usually small, therefore the light produced by an LED bulb is the result of multiple LEDs being illuminated. LEDs create directional light, meaning they must be crafted specially to emit light in all directions like a traditional bulb. They must also be able to do this to receive an ENERGY STAR rating. An ENERGY STAR rating for an LED light bulb also guarantees it is a multi-purpose bulb like a traditional light bulb.

 

Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs

Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs, (CFLs), are energy efficient and use up to 75 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs. To create light, an electrical current is passed through a tube containing argon and mercury vapor, producing ultraviolet light invisible to the human eye. This excites a fluorescent coating causing it to glow and emit light. A CFL requires more energy to start, so it uses a ballast to provide the initial energy and then regulates a lower energy current. A CFL is like traditional long fluorescent tubes seen in larger rooms, just compacted in a spiral shape. Some bulbs mask this spiral in a glass bulb, but this leads to an increase in warm-up time. CFLs take can take up to three minutes to fully power on.

 

Eco-Incandescent Light Bulbs

Eco-incandescent light bulbs are a relatively new, more energy efficient take on traditional incandescent light bulbs. These bulbs are not as energy efficient as the other options, being only 28 percent more efficient compared to the 75 percent of LED and CFL bulbs. While the appearance is similar to traditional bulbs, the bulb is actually a compressed halogen bulb. These bulbs fit in any A-bulb fixture and function in almost the same way as a traditional incandescent bulb.
