hi all this is probably the best way to clean a hammered coin, you usauly find celtic, roman, saxon, medieval hammered silver coins metal detecting with black oxidized deposits stuck to the coin,i have safely been cleaning hammered coins this way for 15 years now.the best way to clean them is firstly use a concentrated lemon juice pour this into a small dish or an egg cup, just easyer to get the coin out, make sure the coin is fully covered in the juice. leave the coin to soak for about 20 minutes take the coin out rubb the coin with your fingers it should start to go like black paste.repeat the prosess until the paste is vertualy gone.then if there is any black paste left on the coin which is hard to remove, use thin kitchen foil and gentley rubb the remaining black area with the dull side of the foil, again placing the coin in the lemon juice each time until the black paste has gone.once the coin is better in appearance wash with soapy water and dry the coin.this prosess can take a bit of time but the results will improve the coins appearence.
