The Details...............

Its annoying when your battery goes flat without warning. This neat little unit can be used wherever you have a 12v  based electrical system. Perhaps your bike, car, camper or boat, or that battery you have to power the lights in your shed can go flat on you without warning, or you would like some idea of how much juice you have left?

This compact gadget will show you by means of six bright LEDs the voltage level of your battery.

Simple fitment instructions are included with the device. A fitting kit comprising  tie wraps and rear mounted adhesive pads and bases is supplied  to allow fitment to any flat or curved surface - fix to dashboard, wall, handlebars, any surface you can stick and loop cable ties around.

This unit is intended to provide a permanent display for use in systems where pressing buttons, and annoying flashing LEDs would distract. Imagine something in your vehicle thats flashing to get your attention, or needs a button pressing to get a reading. This unit looks after itself, and its clear 6 LED levels, and 'emergency flash' at critical battery levels on red LED are simple and easy to understand. You dont need the datasheet to comprehend lots of distracting  coded flashing for each and every LED on the unit. You can set the unit to illuminate just one LED at a time, or act as a multi-LED trend display. (See motorcycle photo for trend operation).

So, by using the 'Yellow Wire' function, you can set this unit to light a line of one to 6 LEDs in a bargraph fashion, or illuminate just a single LED at the current indicated position.

If you would like a very low supply current  model for  long term monitoring of your battery, ('sipping' less than 500 millionths of an amp average current with the same fantastic accuracy ) please see our listings for our 'D' model. The 'D' model is especially for very low current (non vehicle) applications  where minimum current draw is required as the battery has no charging system. The 'D' model lights a single led, or flashes a single LED, according the the 'yellow wire' connection.

Specifications :

  • Microprocessor controlled
  • Just 49mm W x 24mm  H x 16mm D (About the size of your thumb!). SMALLEST 6 LED UNIT ON EBAY!
  • Splashproof construction
  • Voltage : 12v (Max 16v). Accuracy to +/- 0.1v. Unit will operate down to less than 4v.
  • Power Consumption : 2mA in single LED mode, less than 8mA in multi led mode (depending on amount of LEDs lit)
  • Internally PTC fused (self resetting)  - dont risk your system wiring with an unfused unit!
  • Reverse voltage protected. Try connecting it up backwards, you cant break it!
  • Indicates overcharge (alternator regulator failure)
  • Surge clamped supply input - prevents 'spikes' from noisy electrical systems damaging the unit
  • Internal 'watchdog' makes sure the unit can never crash and is always reliable
  • RC integrated voltage measurement input
  • Multiple oversampling - unit takes 10+ readings to obtain greatest accuracy.
  • Built in hysteresis to prevent 'bouncing LED' when unit is at changeover point.
  • Display LEDs updated over 300 times a second - each and every second - fast response!
  • Clear and obvious display without coded multi-led flashing, which needs data sheet to understand! Your granny would know what this unit is telling you!
  • Mode input allows multi LED 'trend bargraph' operation, or single LED illuminated operation
  • Supplied with comprehensive printed instruction sheet

LED Operating Points

3rd green

1st green

Red slow

Red fast

12v DC

Overcharge is indicated at 15.2v, with the unit flashing the  two end LEDs (red and green). This warns you that your alternator or charging system may be frying your battery!

In single LED mode, the LED will ‘travel’ to the current battery status level. In multi-LED mode, all LEDs will light to the current battery status level.

The red LED has multi-functional capability. Once the red LED illuminates, the battery is considered discharged. If further current is drawn, it may deep-discharge and reduce future battery life. User warning against further discharge is indicated by slow flashing, and critical level indicated by rapid flashing of the red LED.

Installation :

The unit has three wires:

Battery +ve

Battery -ve

Display : +12v for multi-LED mode,

0v for single LED mode

Connect the yellow wire to 0v for lowest current,  reduced visibility (useful on vehicles if user prefers)  single LED mode, or connected to 12v for multi-LED ‘bargraph’ mode.

The yellow wire could be wired to a vehicle ignition switch to put the unit into bargraph operation when vehicle operating, or single LED lowest current mode when vehicle idle.

The unit is intended for surface mounting via the backing tape provided. It may also be mounted behind a panel with LEDs exposed through suitable holes. LEDs are on a 7mm pitch and require a 5.5mm clearance hole if mounted in this way.

The internal module may also be removed by simply removing four screws from the rear cover and pressing the leds at the front to pop the electronic module out the rear.

We would love to see pictures of your installation for possible inclusion on our listings to show the great ways this product can be used. Please take the time to send them to us at  the email address in the contact details at the bottom of the page.

We would like to thank 'Jumbo' from the CBF1000 forum for his review, copy provided below. Outside use on a motorcycle is a common installation for this product.

Before fitting this neat little gadget to the bike, I checked out the accuracy of the LED display using an old Yuasa battery. This battery has been in use for years to power the shed radio, and was showing 10.4 volts by my Fluk digital meter under load. At this point the battery monitor was displaying the red LED flashing fast. This agrees with the monitor spec. as per the supplied leaflet.
So far, so good.

I then loaded the battery to force the voltage down as far as 6V. The red LED continued to flash fast. I did not drop the battery voltage down enough to see at what point the red LED would go off.

I then charged the battery using a Datatool. As it charged, I continously checked the actual battery voltage while monitoring the Gamatronix LED display. While taking reading I switched the battery load on to make the reading more meaningful. The charger was temporarily switched off for these load voltage tests.

The monitor slowly worked its way along the six LEDs during charging. Again, the LEDs agreed with the manufacturer’s leaflet throughout charging.
When the first green LED came on, the battery was giving 11.8V under load. Just enough to start the bike.
With the last green LED on, the battery was giving 12.5V under load. This is the minimum we would like to see when all is well with the alternator/regulator.
Again, the monitor was working spot on as specified.

Installing on the bike
For convenience, I took the electrical connection from the front brake switch (+12V) and ground from the lower of the two bolts securing the front brake assembly to the handlebars.
The voltage at the brake switch was 0.2V less than the voltage at the the battery; presumably due to resistance in the cabling (also, note the tail light is powered from the same point as the brake light and will cause a volt drop. See wiring diagram in manual page 23-3). Pulling the front brake lever resulted in a further drop of about 0.3V due to the load from the brake light.

My bike battery had not been charged for a few weeks and was reading 12.6 volts with no load when I began the monitor installation. Turning the key to turn on the ignition, lights etc., dropped the bike battery voltage to 11.5.  The Gammatronix monitor was showing as far as the first yellow LED, as it should.
However, the good news, one with push on the starter button, the monitor briefly showed a solid red LED, the battery voltage dropped to 11.2, and then the engine started instantly!
All monitor LEDs then came on and the voltage at the battery was now showing 13.9 at tickover. (At this point the voltage at the front brake switch was 13.6, which is what the Gammatronix is seeing)

I turned the engine off when things started to get a bit hot after ten minutes. When the bike cooled, I went through similar tests a second time and got good predictable results again.

This little box does what it says on the tin. And at €15 including post, you can’t go wrong.
