Jon was fantastic at responding to my call for help after my first attempt. You have to remove both struts, but also when fitting the second one into position, apply more force to raise the boot on that side, to raise it the extra few mm to get the last engagement. Make sure you release the clips to engage the socket onto the ball. I used a pair of pliers to turn the socket to face the right way.

They're quite a bit stiffer than the stock ford part, but work well and were trivially easy to fit.

It was good value for money, very easy to fit both struts and easy to take off old one's, would recommend to other ford focus driver's.
