''A Piece of British Motorcycling History''
This restored vintage Norton is the outfit that won the Maudes Trophy for Norton in 1926 ridden by Phil pike, it was also part of the winning team for ISDT (I have a copy of the report from 'Motor Cycling' dated August 25th 1926)
The outfit was restored a few years ago and has been featured in Old Bike Mart.
The sidecar is a replica, built from Ash with Aluminium cladding and is on a Norton chassis which is not original but is period.
The bike was based upon a Model 19 however it is fitted with many items that were ahead of the time i.e. heavy duty druid forks with extra friction dampers, 8" brakes(not standard until 1927), wired on tyres (most Nortons used beaded edge at this time), four speed hand change gearbox. The bike is featured in Norton by Mick Woollett page 104.
According to the letter from the Science Museum (with access to the Norton Factory records) I have, the bike was despatched to Phil Pike of Plymouth
Norton used the bike in many of its advertisements of the time (Note photo of Maudes winning again)
The 1926 International Six Day Trials was based in Buxton in Derbyshire, CO9608 formed part of Britains Trophy and Vase winning 'B' Team.
The photograph of the bike with 3 riders features J Lidstone (495 James), Phil Pike (588 Norton) and G Walker (Murray Walkers father on a 493 Sunbeam) the photo was taken at Brooklands.
These 3 were the B Team in the ISDT and won when one of their rivals retired, this allowed Phil Pike to take the high speed test 'steadily' to make sure that they did not lose the trophy.
The outfit is unique and this is reflected in the price, please bid if you are only serious about owning a piece of British Motorcycling Heritage.
The bike is currently 'Sorned'
