I have had one of these for probably 15 years, so when we bought a second coffee maker for my wife (we like different brands), there was no other choice for me. It has a metal basket with a plastic frame and lets the coffee flow better than paper filters. The nearly flat bottom is important because it causes the coffee to steep longer and soak all the grains. Other filters allow the hot water to flow down the center and miss much of the coffee around the edges, making for a thinner brew. It substantially outlasts the fabric mesh versions. No grounds and more flavor! Rinse it in the sink; put it in the dish washer. No messy paper. I will never use another type.

I bought this permanent filter with the hope of giving the big heave-ho to paper filters forever. However, after just the first use, I noticed that the brewed coffee had more sediment than with paper filters; as did my cup of coffee. While I am a true java-fiend, who drinks Turkish coffee --with intentional finely ground sediment on the bottom of the cup, and will drink even bad coffee over no coffee (yes, I would drink mud if it tasted of coffee), I confess that I do not prefer the American style of coffee with sediment. However, it could be that my coffee grounds are too fine, so I will try this permanent filter again when I switch to a new bag of grounds. AND whether the brew then has sediment or not, I will likely hold on to this filter for the off chance that I run out of paper filters.Read full review

The reason I gave this basket such a low rating is because it was advertised as fitting a Bunn home coffee brewer. Well, in the sense that it fits in the bunn filter basket, yes, it fits. But, it doesn't work well for that use. It is not big enough and it is not shaped right to properly fit it. Also, the solid bottom keeps it from brewing the way it should. I ordered it soley for replacing the Bunn paper filters with the gold tone so I could get the oils out of the coffee into my cup. This does not work for that. I finally found one that properly fits the Bunn home brewer BXB, but it costs $17 here on Ebay, but it works wonderfully.

Only used it for a week and it's holding up good. I bought it to replace the torn nylon type filter and so far it's doing what it's supposed to. I am very pleased with it.

Works just like disposable filters, will be cheaper in the long run. Does allow a small bit of residue through, the last cup always has some fine schmutz in the last swallow. Cleans up easily if you don't mind some grounds going down the drain.
