When I first watched Trauma I really wasn't sure what to expect, being that the film is directed by the same person as "My Little Eye", an inventive yet predictable teen horror flick. I think this may have clouded my initial judgement, and so, when watching for the first time I didn't really get it. Blurb from the box: ~~~~~ Frightened and dissorientated, Ben awakes from a coma in hospital to discover that he has been in a car crash. When he learns that his wife Elisa was killed in the accident, his world might as well have ended. A few weeks later ben is out of hospital and attempting to rebuild his life. He moves home and is befriended by Charlotte, his beautiful young neighbour. But all is not what it seems, and haunted by visions of his dead wife, ben starts to lose his grip on what is real and what is not. ~~~ This is the film to see if you have always thought of Colin as just "Mr Darcy". he is one of our great British actors, able to alter the mood of a scene with a slight tilt of his head and a smoulder in the eye. His portrayal of Ben is almost heart breaking in its brilliance. After the first watch I wasn't so sure, but, as it's Colin, I decided to give him and the film just one more chance. I am so glad that I did. Mena Suvari (American Beauty) and Naomie Harris (28 days later) also star - both are fantastic. My advice is not to dismiss this film. It is so different to everything else he has ever done and is not a well known movie so does tend to get overlooked. With films like Girl with a pearl earring, Then she found me, Genova, When did you last see your father, A Single man, Trauma, and Mamma Mia, on his CV, Colin Firth could probably be considered one of the UK's most versatile actors of the 20th and 21st century. I give this 5 stars - watch this if you like psychological thrillers - avoid if you don't like intelligent cinema, clever plots, and good writing.Read full review
I got my DVD today, it was in excellent condition despite being a used one. This movie is SO worth a watch as I feel it is one of Colin Firth's finest performances! It is also a movie that makes you think about what denial can do to a person who is already extremely vulnerable due to a series of tragic events in childhood, and finds life giving him lemons and more lemons - sometimes its tough making lemonade when your're losing your grip on reality! I have been looking for it for ages, and was so glad to see it on offer on this site. Also, I am so happy with the response I got to my query from the seller about when he sent it off to me. He was so pleasant and helpful! GREAT!
A total different genre role for Colin Firth. Not comedy or classical drama or a musical. Not until the end does one find out excatly what has been going on. Is he a good guy or bad? Is his wife dead or is he dreaming? Excatly who is he? The film holds one attention right to the end. If of a nervous disposition have friend with you while you view. The director/producer/camera has certainly captured the suspense - tension mode. The camera angles are excellent and have been carefully worked to give hints but not the full picture of why, where and what. The supporting cast are equally good as Golin Firth so enjoy.
An interesting and yet very weird idea for a movie. The acting is good but not the best. Personally I did not find it that good however that does not mean you won't!
