I am selling my Volvo 480 Turbo; I've owned it for over 7 years and have loved every minute.

Please note that this is a VERY OLD car, bordering on a classic and although it drives amazingly well given the circumstances, it has numerous problems (see below), it is showing its age & is SOLD AS SEEN.

I'm in the process of buying something else, however, I'm currently still using this car (I was confident enough to drive it to the Isle of Wight a couple of weekends ago, almost 300 miles without a hitch), so the current mileage (114,866) will be a little higher. The MOT will run out on 5 June 2012 and I will not have it tested as in its current state it will fail the test (see below).

I could obviously scrap this car but I feel it is too good for that, it would be an interesting buy for someone who knows about such cars and can give it some TLC.

Problems - I have attempted to list them all, but it's possible that I may have missed something - I will amend this listing if I think of anything else.

The BAD bits: Please note, I'm no expert and KNOW NEXT TO NOTHING ABOUT CARS.

Engine. The car loses water, on a long motorway journey this is insignificant, however, if stuck in traffic driving in London on a hot day, after a few hours the reservoir will need topping up. Whilst this is an inconvenience I have lived with the car like this for the last 2 or 3 years, I carry a bottle of water in the car at all times and keep an eye on the water level. My feeling (and I repeat that I'm no expert), is that the water might be evaporating away, to me when the car is idling the engine seems to over-rev slightly (the car has been tuned by a Volvo qualified specialist) and because of this the car runs a bit hot. The fan seems to work and the water pump was replaced when this problem first occurred.

After several weeks of non-use the battery will run down, obviously something (possibly one of the internal lights) is constantly pulling a very small amount of power from it.

EXTERIOR: As would be expected the bodywork is far from perfect, there are numerous small dents, scratches etc, in addition one of the front wings has been replaced with one of a different colour (red rather than white) and there is some rust on the rear wheel arches and also at the base of the doors (see photos, this doesn’t look overly serious to me - but I could be wrong).

The two back tyres have slow punctures and need pumping up weekly.

The water jets don't always work for the windscreen and there seems to be a problem with the movement of the passenger side wiper.

The rear wiper only works when the car is in reverse or when the water jet is activated, the rear water jet itself is missing a "directioner" and the water does not spray onto the rear window – it's more likely fall on the windscreen of the following car!!

The casing around the driver's side wing mirror is missing, although the mirror itself is still intact.

The arms which hold the boot lid open are quite weak - you can guarantee that the lid will bash you on the back of the head when you're least expecting it!!

INTERIOR: Very occasionally (usually in cold damp weather) the dashboard electronic display doesn't illuminate at all or is extremely faint, this has happened on about half a dozen occasions, the fault usually rectifies itself pretty quickly, but on one occasion I drove for about 100 miles before that happened.

The paint on the surface of the rev counter has peeled away and has trapped the rev counter needle so it doesn't move.

The speedometer isn't always accurate, whilst it is ok at lower speeds; it sometimes sticks at about 60mph and does not give an accurate reading until the speed returns to below that level.

On the dashboard a warning light indicates that one of the cars bulbs has blown (which isn't the case, it has been like this ever since I bought the car) and another indicates that one of the doors isn't shut properly even though it is.

The handbrake doesn't work particularly well on steep hills.

The horn doesn't work.

The driver's seatbelt release button doesn’t work so the seatbelt is stuck in the buckled state, I hook the belt over my body when driving and I know that my garage can release the belt but I have no idea how they do this.

Whilst there is a CD radio, only the radio works i.e. THE CD PLAYER DOES NOT WORK.

The plastic storage pocket on the inside of the passenger door is broken.

Some interior trim is coming loose.

Although many of these problems are quite minor and could probably be fixed without much cost by someone who knows what they are doing, one or two may be of a more serious nature.

On top of all this there is the expected usual wear and tear.

The GOOD bit (there's only one!!):

The remarkable thing is, that having listed all the above, the car still drives incredibly well, it burns no oil and I’ve had no new mechanical problems with it in the last couple of years. I have lived with many of the above mentioned problems for a considerable time without too much inconvenience.

The timing belt was replaced less than 18,000 miles ago. A new alternator was fitted in 2010
