What is it?! For all intents and purposes, a Wurlitzer Cougar. But it is not a Wurlitzer Cougar.
A rose by any other name...
Made by the Holman-Woodell company of Neodesha, Kansas, renowned for their high-quality Kustom, La Baye and Wurlitzer instruments. This off-brand Alray Cougar is a contemporary of the 21st Century Music Organette, and equally rare.
This vintage example circa 1968 is in all original, very good condition, right down to the original brown chipboard case with yellow poodle lining (never seen another). As the case points out, these were designed to house the more common Wurlitzer with the 6-inline headstock shape, but the Alray/21st Century example has an infinitely cooler 3x3 headstock shape, reminiscent of the Bakersfield oddball classics like Mosrite, Hallmark, Standel and Gruggett. Other than the pictured chips to the vibrant (and rare) three-tone sunburst finish, the guitar is without issue. All original in every way, right down to the stereo electronics which are unmolested and working. Even has the original wiring diagram sheet glued to the underside of the pickguard! Neck has more meat on the bone for those guys who find Mosrites a little waifish, and the pickups will give your Mosrite a run for its money too. The bridge pickup is Twang City, and the neck is mellow. From surf to rock to jazz, she's got you covered. The trem is super smooth and the rosewood fingerboard is nicely figured.
I have done my best to supply numerous photographs of this instrument in natural sunlight from all possible angles. Please examine the pictures carefully and ask any questions you may have prior to bidding.
Will ship in the pictured original chipboard case fully insured via Japan Post Express Mail Service (EMS). Bidders to pay exact shipping costs; buyers outside the US please contact me for international quotes. Japanese buyers are responsible for the 5% sales tax.
