I pondered over this purchase for a while. I'd been wanting to get in to 3D printing for some time but didn't want to spend too much in case it turned out not to be my bag. On the other hand I wondered just how good a 3D printer kit at this price could really be. The answer... Well, as it turns out, pretty good. Now I'm no expert at anything, the original jack of all trades, master of none and it has to be said that the instructions that came with this kit are pretty dire but a quick look at any Prusa i3 build video will give you most of what you need to put this kit together (and, in fact, many of the subsections are already assembled for you). In all, it took me about 3-4 hours start to finish including the time it took me to track down a connection diagram for the main board. Calibrating and learning to actually use the thing proved and is continuing to prove far more challenging but I am definitely hooked. One of my first projects will be to print the connectors for a new frame (I'm thinking square steel/aluminium tubing) as the one supplied, whilst up to the job does appear to flex a little. Being no expert I can't say how much effect this might be having on the final print quality but I can't imagine they're positive. The results I'm getting are plenty good enough for my purposes right now though so there may be an element of me just wanting to hack it because I can, I mean, I've got a 3D printer, I can pretty much do anything, right? :-) All in all a great place to start your journey into 3D printing. Very happy with my purchase.Read full review

Construction is relatively straight forward and possible with the tools and information provided. It just takes a little time and thought. However, the calibration is a nightmare. In the three months I had this printer I never got a print I was totally happy with. After fiddling with everything that can be fiddled with (bed levels/temperature, stepper motors, voltages, hot end temperatures etc etc) I still got lots of failed prints or just poor quality prints. It also needed constant adjustments between prints. I borrowed a friends off-the-shelf printer and it worked first time with no faffing. It was so easy. If you have lots of time and inclination to tinker with the set up then you could make this into a very good first time printer. There's lots and lots of online support in the forums. I count myself as fairly handy and competent in basic construction and electronics, however I very quickly got out of my depth. If you have a little deeper knowledge of electronics and computer programming, you could do very well. All in all not a great first printer as it knocked my confidence quite a bit. Although the more commercial units are a bit pricier, and use propriety filaments, they work out of the box with minimal faffing.Read full review

I've been into 3d modelling for about 20 years (on and off) and have wanted to get a 3D printer ever since they started become available for the home hobbyist market but I've never been able to afford it. UNTIL NOW!!! Don't kid yourself, you are going to need a bit of time and research to assemble this and set it up optimally, the instructions translated from Chinese aren't super easy to follow but I managed without using any other sources. Also bear in mind this is an entry level unit so don't expect super detailed models without some fiddling. On the plus side assembling and setting up the unit will teach you a lot of useful information about the technology behind the process. I'm really pleased with it. Also please note that although the item did not arrive by the date promised this was a problem with Parcelforce sending it to the wrong depot delaying delivery. Not a problem with dispatch. On that note the printer was incredibly well packed for the journey. I've had to live on nearly nothing for the month as I spent all my free cash on this machine but I wouldn't hesitate to do it again.Read full review

I got this from a family member for my birthday and I have to say, it works brilliantly! It was fairly easy to build but with a rather steep learning curve when it comes to software (Cura 15.04.6 works well if you're planning to have it hooked up over usb, but any slicer works for the gcode files). However, now it's mostly dialed-in it's amazing to use! I've been printing things like mad and loving every minute of it (no matter how frustrating fine-tuning it can be) It has a couple of issues, as it firstly needs an extrusion cooling fan adding to allow it to handle overhangs better, but I can print the housing for one of them really easily out of abs. It could also do with a spring-loaded drive block to handle stuff like NinjaFlex (also so that there's less chewing of the filament by the drive gear)... which is still something that can be upgraded anyway. It would have been nice for the electronics to be enclosed, but that's also something I can upgrade as well. I may even move the LCD so that i can mount the filament spools above above the printer so it works well. Also, a warning, there is a major shock hazard at the back of the switch and AC power input assembly as the back has exposed live and neutral terminals and is very easy to brush against with your hand while levelling the bed. I would recommend printing an enclosure for this assembly as soon as you have it dialled in and be extremely careful until you do so. All-in-all however, and amazing printer and a hell of alot of fun to use, i would wholeheartedly recommend itRead full review
