Whilst some bands flourish under the benefits of slick production (A.F.I'S Sing the Sorrow for example) and plenty of time in the studio for others it can take away some of the magic. Unfortunately for Alkaline Trio they belong to the latter. It is difficult to criticise a band that have given so much to their genre over a lengthy period of time it is even more difficult to contemplate that we have seen the best from the Trio. What endeared fans to them from the beggining was fantastic songwriting, a dark sense of humour and songs that were a litle rough around the edges. That has pretty much disappeared to be replaced with a band that seems to be taking themselves to seriously without being inventive enough to justify it. When you include a song that was previously available on a split EP (Sadie) and the made-for-radio 'Mercy Me' you know that the Trio are no longer doing this for their long standing fans but are trying to reach a new audience, but thats not a crime. There are a few exceptions to this. Time To Waste is probably one of the bands most accomplished songs and 'The Poison's angular opening riff and bouncy chorus grab attention but after 'dethbed' the songs become to bland to hold attention, particularly 'Your Neck' which can only be described as embarrassing. Dan Andriano's closer 'Smoke' however is a nice crooning ending to an otherwise poor album. This album really completes the direction that was hinted at on 'Good Mourning' but not executed with nearly as much panache. From Here to Infirmary, Goddamitt, Maybe I'll Catch Fire and even The Alkaline Trio 'demo' album all deliver fantasticly accessible pop punk with wit, style and immediacy. Unfortunately 'Crimson' cant hold a torch to these albums.Read full review
