This is a very adaptable CPU. For older technology, it's just as speedy & dependable as a "new technology" unit. Mine unlocks to 4 cores with a socket AM3 motherboard which makes it great for everything. But it's got an unlocked multiplier as well so you can run it at very high speeds with 2 cores and keep the heat/power costs down. The motherboards for the AM3 platform are usually less expensive and more plentiful than for Intel CPUs. I like buying used CPUs now because they are just as good as the new ones for general use and gaming. This one is a good choice; especially for the office or student and it allows for a good gaming experience with a fairly decent video card. I do prefer the 3-core units even if you get one with the multiplier locked. The unlocked multi isn't really all that - depends what you are using it for.Read full review
Works very well, but for some reason it does not perform as well as my Athlon II x 2 B28 CPU. It scores slightly lower in Windows 7 Experience Index (WEI) and much lower in CPU-Z, despite that it has so much level 3 cache. The Athlon II x 2 does have more level 2 cache and a higher clock speed, so this may be the difference???

I build high end PC's with speeds up to 5.5 GHz for games, CAD, and Simulators. and although I have these very systems running in my Home/Office - It's the AMD Phenom II X2 555 Black Edition I choose for my personal system. I pair it with the M4A89GTD Pro/USB3 from ASUS and HAF Tower, 8GB RAM and a smiple air cooler. Why? simple, I multi task a lot. With the 555 unlocked and running four cores it's bullet proof. The 555 BE is like no other. It has so much head room that I can Geek to my heart's content. I often will be down loading a large video file while watching HD video and surfing the web. by surfing I mean I often have 100 to 150 sites open at the same time. the 555 never slows, crashes or heats up. In the winter it never goes above 89F, and in the summer 111F is the max. Only problem, I can't build them fast enough to keep one in my office for long. LOL, the one I'm on now is bread boxed till the tower gets here.Read full review
Good price for a decent dual core processor. Was hoping to unlock this processor to 4 cores, however it is one of the few that are unstable unlocked. Still performs and overclocks with the original 2 cores fantastically. Quick shipping, found it in the mail and wasn't expecting it yet.

Along with a 4GB ram upgrade..this processor speeds up an old AM2+ W5243 emachine considerably. With a decent graphics card I could actually game on this rig without a problem.
