The History and Antiquities of Lewes and its
Vicinity. With the Natural History of the District by Gideon Mantell. Complete
with 38 plates and the large folding map.
HORSFIELD, Rev. T.W.
J Baxter, Sussex Press, Lewes, 1824 & 1827. First edition, 2
volumes, 4to. The two volumes have the original illustrated boards and have
been re-backed in quarter cloth with hollow spines, head- and tail-bands and
facsimiles of the original paper labels. There are vignette illustrations to
the title pages. In the two volumes a total of 27 family pedigrees are set
out. All the listed plates, maps and engravings are present.
Volume 1: xiv + + 344pp + xlvi (seven appendices; including
“Outlines of the Natural History of the environs of Lewes” by Gideon Mantell
and lists of notables), + v (index) + (advertisement). There is a folding
frontispiece plus 29 lithographic plates, 2 maps, (one a large folding plan of
Lewes and its environs; the other in the text), 23 wood engravings and 3 double
sided folding sheet pedigrees.
Volume 2: x, 268pp, xxv (several appendices; including An Itinerary of
Sussex), 4pp (index). There is a frontispiece and 7 copper engraved plates, 13
wood engravings (two of these are to be found on a separate plate showing the
Royal Pavilion and the Chain Pier in Brighton). There are 3 folding pedigrees
and 9 further single sheet pedigrees covering 13 families with 13 more printed
within the paginated text. A further 2
copper engraved plates and another pedigree are included before page one which
were supplied with volume 2 as additional adornments to volume 1. Also supplied
with this volume was a “uniform Title Page” for volume 1 which is found in this
volume behind its title page. This volume contains detailed topographical
descriptions of 43 villages around Lewes.
Book Condition: Very Good. The boards are, however somewhat stained,
rubbed and bumped, more especially Vol I. The large folding view of Lewes has a
small repair to the top margin and strengthening to an edge. The engraved title
to this volume has some closed tears and creases but no loss. The large folding
map has had tears neatly repaired with no loss and has some foxing. (See
image). Some plates in volume 1 are a trifle spotted. The paper in volume two
is browner than that of volume one, with three openings rather dark. This
appears to be common with this volume, presumably due to the paper stock used
by the local printer. There is some foxing in volume 2 largely limited to the
tissue guards and sometimes the associated plate.
