Bought because I'd finished most of the series tha McCaffrey had written by herself, Acorna was the first book I'd bought where she had collaborated with Margaret Ball. I was expecting a similar experience to the one I had reading the Petaybee trilogy, and wasn't disappointed. Margaret Balls' influence and writing style are evident throughout the book, and blend well with McCaffrey's. I found the Acorna series easier to get into than the Crystal Singers series, but less so than Dragonriders of Pern - the writing style seems less focused on hard sci-fi in this series, but still keeps a fair amount of it in; a very good mix in all. Acorna offers a great set-up for the next books in the series, but so far has probably been the best book of the series, with Acorna's Quest coming a close second. The universe itself is well-realised, and character development (for most characters) in Acorna seems well thought out, for the most part. I'd call it a good read, but I'm almost completely biased :DRead full review
