Another of those series that was cruelly overlooked by the video age. Not repeated (at least not often) and with only selections making it to video release. At the time it was compulsive viewing. Maureen Lipman was fantastic as agony aunt Jane Lucas - but then you would expect that of Maureen. With a supporting cast including Simon Williams (then known more for dramatic roles, such as 'Upstairs, Downstairs'), Diana Weston, Maria Charles, Peter Blake and Peter Denyer (Dennis from Please Sir) and written partly by Anna Raeburn, a well-known agony aunt. Series 1 dates back to 1979 and the final series was in 1981. I doubt that I could have seen any episodes from 1981 until this DVD release but I was still almost word-perfect on the theme tune, such was the effect that the programme originally had on me. When watching the DVD I was surprised at the ending of the first series, as I was expecting other events that actually occured in the climax of the second series (which coincidentally is due to be released tomorrow). I think it was in the second series that the programme really took off but the first series does have some wonderful moments. The relationships between Jane and her mother (Charles), husband (Williams), seretary (Weston) and the DJ of the radio station that hosts her phone-in show, Andy Evol (Blake) are well-crafted but the humour is somewhat dated. Evol, later to get religion and become Andrew Love, is a great character (if a little sterotypical as an egotistical yet insecure male). It was a joy to watch these episodes again and I shall certainly invest in series 2 at some point. But the 4 star rating applies for the comedy content; there are no DVD extras and the picture quality is not of a high standard, not having been remastered. However, like many shows from my younger days, the important thing is to be able to see Jane Lucas in her full glory and I can forgive such shortcomings, although not enough to make this a five star review. I have watched the DVD once. I shall certainly watch it again, although I'm not sure it will be a regular repeat feature.Read full review
great series and love Maureen Lipman. Looking forward to when the sequel series from the late 80s is on DVD.
