This works well for me as a newbie to pad controllers. The pads are quite rigid but respond reasonably well to velocity and aftertouch and the MPD226 feels robust enough for the player to feel able dig in without fear of damaging the unit, although not so sure about my ageing joints as I'm finding myself using a certain amount of excess force due to discrepancies in response across various kits, which can up to a point be resolved by tweaking velocity curves etc in the sound source and/or the edit pages in the controller. A recurring and invariably unfixable problem is no sound being outputted below a certain velocity level on some VI's which shatters any illusion of playing a real instrument, but I feel loath to point an aching finger anywhere in particular as to the cause. The Sonivox Cinematic percussion, one of the included sound set downloads available on registering the unit is very handy. Read full review
