I'd read a number of Steven Pressfield's books in the past and so had high expectations for this one. I wasn't disappointed. He has a great grasp of the time and historical setting and a thorough knowledge of what is known about Alexander's life. He allows Alexander himself to tell the story of his march from Macedonian to Indian and the presentation of the great battles he fought along the way is especially vivid and impressive. Alexander's narration also sheds light on the key relationships he shared with his father Phillip II, his mother Olympias and lesser figures such as Cleitus. My only complaint about this book is that it is simply too short. For example, the siege of Tyre is referenced in the text but not described in any great detail. It would have been so good to read Pressfield's account of the siege. That's a small complaint however. All in all, a great read and one I would recommend highly.Read full review
