Loved this book, it is so well written. Easy to guess which president's wife the central character is based on and she comes across as being a pleasant, likeable, empathetic and astute person without making you want to vomit. It moves along at a cracking pace, although not in a breathless manner so that the reader is desperately turning the pages to see what happens next. So many of the phrases and expressions are the same as ours, but the pageantry associated with college alumni seemed, at least to me, preposterous and ostentatious to say the least. Her husband's remarks, wise-cracking and ripostes made me laugh out loud, which is a bit suspect, given that I live alone. I could only wonder how it was that the author could think of such things to put in his mouth. On the strength of this book, I ordered two of her others, which are waiting to be read. I can't wait.Read full review

Engaging from the first page. I heard about it on Woman’s Hour a few weeks ago and it was highly recommended. Well written, interesting and loosely based on the life of Laura Bush. I’d recommend it, I can’t put it down.

The book is certainly a page turner; a lot racier than I had imagined it to be and gives a convincing and detailed portrayal of life in America in the 60s.

Enjoying this book it highlights the very big difference between the perception people have of what was acceptable behaviour back then in relationships with the opposite sex.
