Ethan Hawke takes the lead as Sergeant Jake Roenick, a burnt-out cop babysitting a secluded and near-deserted Detroit police station on its last night of service. With notorious gangster Marion Bishop (Laurence Fishburne) in its holding cell, Jake experiences a world of trouble as the station is then attacked by an army of dirty cops desperate to kill Bishop before he can blow the lid on their years of wrongdoing. To cover their tracks, says ringleader Gabriel Byrne, they're going to have to kill everybody inside. Every cop in the precinct and every criminal too. To survive, they're going to have to put aside their differences and work together, which basically means everyone, even the crack addict (John Leguizamo), gets a gun. But not if Jake can help it, breaking out the heavy artillery and arming every able-bodied person in the place with the means to blow the bad guys away. Outnumbered with inferior firepower, it's a desperate struggle for survival that costs both sides a lot of blood. Tense, involving and incredibly exciting, Assault on Precinct 13 is easily one of the best action thrillers you'll see this year. An awesome update of a classic original.Read full review
Having heard friends say this new version was a great movie, and having loved the original, I made the purchase. No regrets, this version is a good film, although some of the characters are stretching the point a little. In particular, the floozy station admin woman. Good to look at, I guess, but over egged as a character. The doctor, who has been treating the main character for depression following a multiple shooting some while previously, was the inevitable Hollywood beauty. Hardly probable in real life? Anyway, she finds herself trapped on New Years Eve in the beleagured station house. Stretching the grounds of probability way too far for my personal taste. She "buys it" later. Poor thing. Laurence Fishburn as ever, excellent. The original though has the edge.
I bought the dvd because i love the original movie by john carpenter, sadly apart from only a slight scent in the air of the original plot, it is a movie full of modern swearing for effect and it would have been better sticking to the original plot than doing things the way they did with this remake . Glad i bought it though, so i did not have to pay loads of money for a family to go into cinema to see this pile of trash. Anyway thats my rant over with, Gotta smoke? I have moments!
Had to buy this dvd as we were watching the movie on Sky THREE when the reception decided to throw a wobbly and we were so into this riveting storyline we just had to know how it finished. A very good film, full of suspense and twists and turns, but not so confusing as to reduce the interest. The slow start is soon forgotten as the plot grips your interest, that is until the reception went! The only star we knew (and loved) was Lawrence Fishburne from his appearances in the Matrix but the whole cast we well chosen for their respective roles, and I can thoroughly recommend this film to all.
