In fact, this is the best and strongest of the group released disc. In my opinion, here is the group's creativity tip. If you like alternative rock, that is what is needed. My recommendations.
Nice chill out album,,Following on the heels of the well-received 2003 release VEHICLES & ANIMALS comes 2005's TOURIST from London-based quartet Athlete. More ambitious and polished than its predecessor, TOURIST is full of the lush, melodic rock that earned Athlete comparisons to Coldplay. Yet the album is marked by a sonic and compositional sophistication that is difficult to ignore. The mixture of electric and acoustic instruments, keyboards and electronic textures, shifting rhythms, and layered vocals is perfectly articulated, creating an overall experience that is dreamy, intricate, and alluring. As impressive as the sound of TOURIST is the strength of frontman Joel Pott's songwriting. From the ballad-like opener "Chances" (which erupts into an epic, orchestral sweep) to the record's first single, "Wires" (a song written when Pott's daughter was born prematurely), to the lilting melodies of "Street Map," TOURIST is packed with memorable hooks. With the exception of the mid-tempo rock of "Modern Mafia," TOURIST is sedate and atmospheric, yet each track displays such craftsmanship that the album plays almost like a pop symphony.Read full review
I can heartily recomend Athlete to anyone. Having not really heard of them up until the release of Tourist. A friend introduced me to both Vehicles & Animals and Tourist. I gave it a listen and initially thought the album was just OK/good. Having given this truly magical album a few more chances I was not disappointed, they have really found an incredibly enjoyable, unique style and sound. They sensitively use synth sounds to produce a passionate and atmospheric collection of tracks. It is rare that I have a album where I can't spot an "album-filling" weak track. If you are a music lover and haven't listened to it yet, a mere £3 on Ebay looks like the current going price, give it a chance and it'll will very quickly become one of your favourites.
After being introduced to this band I bought their earlier album, "Vehicles and Animals". A real "grower". I defy anyone to listen to a few tracks and not be singing them over and over again. Great vocals, real instruments with lyrics you can hear. Throw in a little synth' and electronic flourishes and you end up with a superb mix of contemporary indie/pop which sooths and entertains in equal measure. "Tourist" continues the theme with the group developing deeper more meaningful words and haunting melodies. "Wires" in particular stands out as a track of excellence.
