I found this film very interesting and not what I thought at all. Very good twists and story line. Excellent acting and great film in general. Would recommend. A+ Film
An enjoyable film, good script good acting but I think Anna Friel is a fine actress anyway. Shame it wasn't longer It was an absorbing tale and put an interesting alternative to the tales surrounding the Countess.
The story about the reality of life, full of politics and injustice. In the past and present. The film is based on the story of Elizabeth Báthory, a 16th/17th century Hungarian countess. Her story takes place in a part of the Kingdom of Hungary, now Slovakia. She is infamous for killing many young women because ''according to legend'' she thought that bathing in their blood would preserve her youth. Eventually the royal authorities investigated, and she was walled up in her castle, where she died four years later.
This film had some interesting ideas, i don't want to spoil it for anyone but if you're a fan of the Elizabeth Bathory horror stories about her being a bloodthirsty murderess then this film may not be for you. It tries to take the classic tales about Bathory and put a twist on them, making her misunderstood and innocent, framed for her crimes. Some of the film is enjoyable and quite dark and gloomy, but it's a little overpowered by bad 'put on' hungarian accents, the odd slip of the english accent into the dialogue and of course, rollerskating monks. (No that's NOT a typo) Overall it's an average watch if you're new to the subject, but for followers of the story that inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula, it's probably not worth the hours (it's a long film) to see a classic horror tale turned around.Read full review
