This adaptation of the book by James Elroy has a great cast and the plot is truthful to the book- which is also its problem. At times the story plays as confused and the denouement is preposterous and nonsensical. In addition, the book is a famous LA noir novel- so it contains messed-up characters, a twisting plot...and lots of LA. So, it's a pretty big dissapointment that LA doesn't appear in the film! It is shot almost entirely on set from the first scene and it is very obvious. You could excuse this if it was made in 1982, which is exactly what it looks like. But it was made in 2006- thirteen years after Jurrassic Park and they can't show believale exterioir shots of LA from the time of the story. There is good cinematopgraphy on show but it is too dated looking. This film is still enjoyable to watch and I recommend it if you have read the book. I came away wishing I could watch more, only done a bit better.Read full review

The Black Dahlia is a gripping and intense film about an actual murder in 1940's America although the rest of the storyline is fictitional as they never actually solved the murder. The storyline is quite confusing and you have to pay attention or you get completely lost in the many twists and plots that are involved in this story. Lovers of LA confidential will enjoy this film as it has the same kind of narrative. You need to be sober and clearheaded when you watch The Black Dahlia or you might miss a crucial bit of the mysterious story of murder, vice and pornography.
