my wife likes this film very much also others as well just anything in general really about christian slater.
Based on a little known Willkie Colins novel, Basil is the story of a man called Basil who falls in love with and marries Margarate Sherwin. What he doesn't know is that a friend of hers, John Mannion, has been having an affair with her to seek revenge on Basil's brother Ralph who had an affair with his sister and died in an abortion atempt.
I am a great fan of actor Jared Leto so I anticipated a quality performance. With a good supporting performance from Christian Slater this is a visually stunning period drama worth watching. Leto plays an Englishman (quite convincingly) seriously crossed in love and unusually the film is a riches to rags tale which suggests that you might actually be happier being poor but true to yourself. A measured dose of raw emotion, violence and sexual tension supports a moving story that does not stray into the 'Chick flick' camp however leaves you feeling that you have travelled the rocky road with Basil.
This film has all the ingredients of a classic soap opera. There's love, deception, jealousy, rich man falls for poor girl etc. The film is based on a novel written by Wilkie Collins, one of the most important English writers of the 19th century (a great friend of Charles Dickens. The film has a nice direction and a fine cast, never sliding in hollow sentimentalism. Maybe the only negative point is that the plot is too predictable but you can still have a good time watching the film. Christian Slater and Jared Leto do well with the english accent especially Jared Leto. A cosy night in with a box of chocs and you'll enjoy it.
This film is just perfect .. I loved it .. actors are great the story is beautiful and entertaining ... It's a must see for any fan of Jared Leto .. Between love and friendship to Betrayal and fight ... every feelings around one story ...
