I first encountered Beethoven's quartets many decades ago in LPs of these recordings by the Quartetto Italiano. They are beautiful interpretations and I have enjoyed hearing them again after switching my allegiance to the recordings by the Busch and the Vegh Quartets. The fashion for some time has been towards expressing the element of struggle particularly in the late quartets which is missing from the Quartetto Italiano. This is particularly the case in the highly rated recordings by the Takacs Quartet. The Quartetto Italiano versions especially of the early opus 18 quartets are admirable in their own sweet way, and I'm glad that they are readily available again.
