As an aspiring writer myself (aren't we all?), I'm much more interested in the 'how' than the 'what' of good writing. I'll usually read the back page of a book first, then start at the beginning, just to see how the author gets there and the twists and turns move the story along. There's a faint underlying thread of menace and fear running through Beyond Black; nothing too overt, but there it is. I was drawn along by the story of an odd kind of medium, who makes her living by 'reading' her subjects, aided by a mischievous spirit guide and a misfit personal manager. But all the time, that little thread kept me glued to the book, fearing the inevitable denouement, but unable to stop listening. Ms Mantel doesn't need my praise, she's had awards galore, but I'll be working my way through her other work and that's for sure.Read full review
