Always been a fan of the franchise and always enjoy the experience, it's good fun, entertaining, immersive and certainly keeps you focused. If you're looking for a good old fashioned shoot'em up you can't go far wrong with bioshock.

Bioshock is a very unique game. You have the historical significance as its set in 1960, and the weapons in the period are very good as well (revolver pistol, tommy machine gun, old style grenade launcher as well as a wrench and crossbow), and you get given missions to do and complete. As well as this, you get a research camera to research all the potential bad guys and each time you fill the research bar (also depends on how good your photography skills are and you can do this 4 times), you get bonuses like do more damage to them and little hints on how to defeat them quickly. There are 51 achievements to gain throughout the game, and most can be achieved on one playthrough (I am currently on my 2nd playthrough and mopping up any achievements that I didn't get first time ...
