Black Books is a comedy set in a messy bookshop run by a messy drunk called Bernard who hates customers. It's a must for anyone who works, or has worked, in retail: Bernard's attitude towards customers is amazingly bad and he says or does whatever he likes. His assistant Manny is very patient with his boss but ends up tidying up the mess (which there usually is). Next-door-best-friend Fran supplies the red wine, cigarettes and female banter. The three make this comedy funny because the things that happen are quite possibly real situations (although I pity anyone having to cope with anyone like Bernard). The setting is usually the bookshop but that doesn't seem to matter! They always get stuck in some bad situation but manage to scrape their way out. There are some gems but I will point out Grapes Of Wrath in Series One, where Bernard and Manny get drunk on crazily expensive wine and Bill Bailey puts his hair up in pigtails.....enjoy!Read full review
For those of you who love series like Father Ted or Alan Partridge, Black Books would definitely suit you down to the ground! Starting in the year 2000, the series follows a book shop owner called Bernard Black, an alcoholic, 50 cigs a day mad man, his assistant Manny, equally as mad but more gentle and sweet, and Bernards best friend Fran, a fellow shop owner who wants a man. They continue to get themselves into awkward situations and embarressing moments which you will find to be quite amusing. Excellent script writing, very random humour, a blast from the past in comedy, well worth a watch if you want something different from todays sitcoms.
After watching 1 episode of this on paramount i imediaetly fell in love with this show. It is about a failing alcoholic miserable book shop owner (Dylan Moran - shaun of the dead) who decides to get a little extra help in the shop (Bill Bailey - never mind the buzzcocks) and what comes along the road is nothing short of comedy genius. Featuring dry witty humour this is one of the funniest t.v series i have ever seen and Dylan Moran's performance and comedy is nothing short of marvelous. I have not given this 5 stars because there are still things i like more but i would definetly give it 4.5 with out a question of a doubt. I do not have a bad thing to say about this dvd. I picked this up for £7.09 and it is an absolute bargain. You can get it on Ebay for around £14 (buy now option) but i highly recommend you get it online from HMV. It cost £10 and at least your guranteed to get it, especially if you go in store(checked online 01-03-09) By the way, this is my 1st dvd review and am a terrible typer and i can't be bothered to go back and check the spelling's. I hope this help's. If sarcasm annoy's you then do not buy this.Read full review
