Sporting the charisma of a lobotomised newt, hunky US Defense Intelligence agent Van Damme goes AWOL and turns up in Hong Kong, where he bumps into mountain man Gibb who, like Van Damme, is there to take part in a secret international martial arts competition. They become good buddies. This gives Van Damme extra reason to get riled when he eventually faces Yeung in the final, since this murderous, cheating inscrutable, yellow-bellied Korean villain has stomped all over his friend's head in the semis. Journalist Ayres tags along to provide a modicum of hero worship and heterosexuality. Forest Whitaker's cameo adds plumage to what is otherwise a well-plucked turkey, humourless and plagued by a script full of stilted mumbo-jumbo.
I really enjoy martial arts films and have always been interested in the Kumatie tournament. This film was a true masterpiece.
Excellent film well worth the money ............................................................................
