Thousands must have written reviews of this and other books by Elizabeth David, probably Britain's pre-eminent cookery writer. This was her first work and probably has more E D in it than any other. I love the discursiveness, forthright and occasionally self-indulgent way in which she writes about food, places, people and publishers (good and bad). Extracts from the work of others appear too, which adds to the entertainment, as this is an entertaining as much as a practical work. Some may read it with a feeling of 'OK, now where are the recipes', which misses the point. There are hundreds of recipes, some of only a few lines, because this is a small paperback about Mediterranean food, not a vast photo album showing the posed works of a celebrity chef. It should be remembered that this was written in the late 1940's and revised only where this is vital, rather than to realign it with the times, so references to any produce not native to the British Isles some sixty years ago may be seen as condescending. On the other hand many varieties of fish are all but unavailable now and some meats are not so easily obtained either: this book may more practicable for us now than would any standard book of British cooking! As a work in itself I prefer her 'Italian Food', but this is a perfect introduction to Elizabeth David.Read full review
