I first heard this band on the speakers of a Virgin Megastore, their single 'The Otherside' blaring for the world to hear, and I just loved the hypnotising sound they had. Breaks Co-op takes you on a relaxing ride with a mixture of mellow bass and guitar beats, with a hint of electronica added to the mix. Whenever I hear 'settle down', I just want to get a surfboard and head to the nearest beach...even though I don't know how to surf. This is a great album for a lazy night in and a glass of wine, especially if you have the song 'A place for you' and 'Duet' playing in the background. So glad I bought this album...The Sound Inside is truly about the many different sounds and music influences that this New Zealand band are inspired by. An album definitely worth listening to!!!
I must admit I was unsure whether or not I would like this album. I thought Breaks CO-Op was just a 'hobby' band for Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe, but I was amazingly surprised. Every track gives off a summer vibe! It has that New Zealand laid back feel! If you like Crosby, Stills Nash and Young then you will love this album. My favourite tracks are Too Easily, The Other Side and Question of Freedom. This album was released last year in New Zealand. The Sound Inside' has been a double-platinum selling hit, with lead single 'The Otherside', the No.1 airplay hit of 2005 in New Zealand and winner of Song of the Year at the New Zealand Music Awards.
This album sat forlornly on my cd shelf after the first couple of listens. Then after hearing the beautiful, Eagles-like 'The Otherside' again on the radio recently, I started playing the album again and it has grown on me tremendously since. The songs are good: catchy and, at times quite edgy, and explore a range of styles, from harmony rich songs, in the style of the Eagles, to dubb and trip-hop (think Massive Attack). I think the diversity of styles they use is perhaps the weakness of the album. What they do IS good, but they lack their own musical voice at present. Fans of chill-out might find tracks full of lavish harmonies and jaunty melodies offputting - and vice-versa. However, I rather enjoy the variety. Give it a try, see what you think...
This Cd was a surprise find. Musically it takes you on a journey through different influences, rap, trip, chill out and acoustic. The writing is warm and heartfelt with, in my opinion , " A Place For You " being one of the most beautiful songs ever written. Recommended
Quite a cool album, not as punchy as i thought it might be,but had only heard one track off the album to gauge it with. All in all though a fairly thought-provoking debut from Zane and his mates and would definately recommend it for chilling-out to in the garden this summer.
