The Ian Allan Combined Volume, for those too young to remember it, was the British Railways' locomotive number list covering all six regions and Standard Classes of BR in the 50s and 60s. After that it held little interest for most of the train-spotters of the day, because steam locos had been scrapped and replaced by green (soon to be blue) tin boxes with internal (infernal?) combustion engines (Yawn!) There is a short history, photograph, specification and description of each class and sub-class, and in combination with the Ian Allan Locoshed books, was the 'bible' for us trainspotters at that time. The one I bought recently (1956/57) was almost mint condition, unlike most spotters' books which became dog-eared and dirty from constant use. Really good condition volumes are now rare and costly - but Oh! Such memories ........ Modellers unsure of which numbers and names can be applied to engines of particular classes will have all the data they need in one of the Combined Volumes - which is why I needed it - and the Locoshed books will tell you which locos were allocated to sheds near the area being modelled at any specific time. Non-modellers will just sit back and remember better times ...... There were no alternative sources of this information, except Railway Gazettes, available for us and the Gazette was costly, being a monthly magazine. So there really is no comparable book available now, either.Read full review
Bought this book when it originally came out in 1963. Over the years like so many other things it got lost. When the chance came to buy it again i couldn't wait to buy it again. All rail enthusiasts will be familiar with it. But for those who are not . All regions of B.R are clearly detailed and put on separate pages as are diesel and electric locos and multiple units' All shed allocations are at front of the book and there are a lot of photos and some colour plates. All in all a very good addition to any rail collection. Very good value and great nostalgic value. I recommend it highly
