I was sceptical about finding a bird feeder that would keep out our very persistent squirrels, but this actually works. The squirrels tried very hard to get at the nuts, but have not succeeded. This is well designed and very strong. The birds soon got used to it. The woodpecker can't get inside the cage, but can use its longer beak to reach the nuts from the outside. It is much simpler to open and fill than any other type of feeder I've tried. I also like the tray/solid base, which catches the bits and prevents them falling to the ground, which can encourage mice or rats. It is definitely worth the extra money for a feeder that works so well and prevents the squirrels from eating all the nuts. Very happy with this product.

Well-made and substantial ,BUT ,the squirrels managed to wrench the lid open fairly quickly .I therefore put a small padlock on the lid and now they can't open it .The small birds now have it to themselves and the squirrels have given up trying .This is the strongest peanut feeder I've had but the lid really needs to be made completely squirrel-proof

The best feeder I have ever owned! It’s a very attractive colour and very strong. The design is good as it has a wide gap between the bars and the hopper which will hopefully keep the squirrels at bay (so far, so good!). The fastener is quite stiff to open but this is an advantage as I don’t have to wire it up to prevent the squirrels opening it.

This is attractive, well-made and effective. Squirrels, magpies, crows & jackdaws had been dominating our bird feeding station - depleting the sunflower kernels so quickly that we were having to replenish the feeders twice daily and double the amount we were buying. The outer cage denies them access but allows smaller birds to feed through the cage or from within the cage. They soon overcame any fear of entering the cage. We were pleased to see that woodpeckers could also feed from it. The cage is opened by lifting its domed top which is hinged and secured by a spring clip. The spring clip is tight (as it needs to be) but this can be fiddly to operate and requires reasonably strong fingers. The hook for hanging the feeder isn’t squirrel proof in our estimation. We think they’d be able to work out a way to dislodge the feeder and let it fall to the ground so that feed spills out. So we’ve secured it to the feeding station arm with a cable tie. The arm is sufficiently low to allow it to be refilled in situ although this takes a bit of practise. The alternative which we may pursue would be to get a metal connecting ring with a spring latch. This would allow the feeder to be removed for refilling. As this weakness can easily be overcome, we’ve given the feeder 5 stars. It’s cured a really frustrating problem and so we’re delighted with the purchase.Read full review
