This has to be the best astronomy television series of all time. The series is just over 40 years old by now!...and it is still way better than any astronomy programme you see these days. This is totally due to the mesmerising delivery of Carl Sagan. He makes science concepts sound interesting and available to everyone. The Vangelis sountrack fits perfectly with Carl Sagans delivery. Carl Sagan + Astronomy + Vangelis = a perfect combination. No wonder this series is still so popular after over four decades! If you have a chance to buy or watch this, you will not be disappointed

I watched this series back in 1980/81 and loved it. I've always been fascinated by all things space-related from a very early age, and I was (still am) a huge fan of The Sky at Night. Whereas SaN focused on one topiceach show, Carl Sagan's Cosmos told the whole story - how the universe began, where it was at at the time, and where it is going. It was fascinating stuff and Sagan was so engaging. Having watched it again, it is no less fascinating or engaging. It still captures the imagination and fills the viewer with awe an the enormity of the universe and all within it. Obviously, some of its content is out of date, simply because space travel and exploration has progressed immensely since 1980, but it is no less fascinating because of that. What the passage of time does allow the watcher to do is consider what Sagan said back then against where we are now, and compare the changes and - perhaps startlingly - the things that haven't changed, or what Sagan accurately predicted. To be completely fair to this boxset, it has been updated with new theories and discoveries,as much as it can, which is great to see. I am so thrilled to have been able to acquire a copy of this brilliant series - it has been an absolute pleasure to watch again, and I will sit my grnadchildren down to watch it, too, when the right time comes. I saw this when I was a boy and in an inspired moment searched out clips again on Youtube. Since then I've bought a copy for my mates 40th and another for a mate who is bedridden and one for me. Carl Sagan has to be one of the most charismatic lecturers of all time. He fuses science with history whilst keeping one eye firmly on the future. His contemplation of mans achievements and follies are inspired. Passionate discourse mixed with a dry sense of humour. Exacting science mixed with a poetic vision of our place in the cosmos. It has been said that this series has dated but only in minor ways and he was ahead of his time in challenging the narrow mindedness of religious dogmas. If you're feeling jaded watch this to remind yourself of how astounding the universe is.
In an age of Internet stupidity, this is a gem of Science and knowledge. It got me interested in physics and computers at an early age when shown on TV and still gives me a warm feeling when watching it today. The graphics may be a little stilted in comparison to current technology but the scientific content is sound and Carl Sagan's sense of wonder and enthusiasm shine through. Coupled with a haunting and beautiful soundtrack from Vangelis it's entertaining viewing
