DESCRIPTION:   for reference please see Hi Sklo Lo Sklo - Post War Czech Artglass - Mark Hill  -Pages 136 & 137 for the same vase & other examples in the Nemo range   Or Millers Collectables 2009 Page 221 for the same vase in a rounded globe form.

Absolutely beautiful optical and enamelled globe vase form the much respected Borske Sklo factory of Czechoslovakia, designed by Max Kannegiesser in 1963 - in exquisite transparent enamelled pastel colours of jade, amethsyt and gold. The range was entitled Nemo, consisting of many differing shapes and sizes, whereby it was without doubt one of the most successful designs of the early 60's, being exported to over 89 countries across the world. Czech artglass had for many decades, undeservedly,  been overlooked & somewhat derided. In the last 3/4 years tastes & fashions have changed, bringing Czech post war artglass more into vogue & hence the appreciation of the glass hierachy & the public alike. The huge impact of Czech design was realised by Mark Hill, who wrote the above publication which merely underlined artglass' latest addition to its ranks. Mark Hill was a specialist at London's Sotheby's & Bonhams before branching out to form his own internat company. He is now a major contributor to Millers Collectables & has many alliances with Ebay itself. The mould blown range was made up of four fused sections whereby the only trace of this can be seen on the vases base with a cross gradually descending into a slightly sunken moulded base. The vase gradually ascends outwards to form a perfect globular form with splendid arcing and crescented perimeter walls. The gentle curves of the vases waist gradually disapate to form shallow tapering gentle upper slopes which eventually leads the eye to the mouthrim itself. The latter is of a medium size with a bevelled outer edge which surmounts the beauty of the vases decoration below. The vases decoration is made up of shallow ' water lily ' like shallow pools of enamelled glass arranged in circles at its lower reaches. The water lily pools central areas sit proud of the vases clear ground - with their very outer limits being slightly sunken into the vases delicate walls. The exquisitely beautiful pastels tones of azure or jade, amethyst and gold are set amongst lily pads with no colour at all. allowing each coloured globule to recieve maximum impact. The circular pools of the vases lower & mid region give rise to more egg shaped pools at the midpoint & in turn, onto elongated teardrops seen gracing its upper slopes. The beautiful enamelled colours are in perfect harmony with each other with the clear portals providing rest for the eye & the gilded lily pads providing that magical appearance of extravagance & opulence. The piece is thin walled whereas its very feminine and delicate appearance belies its actual strength & robustness. Apart form the vases obvious beauty , the range was also highly prized for the optical qualities of the transparent & semi transparent portals. These gave rise to each lily pad window creating an optical illusion of smaller windows, creating magical subtle rainbow like mirrored images and an optical effect of a myriad of smaller circular spots appearing in the background. Both natural & unnatural light reflects, refracts and diffuses light in all manner of directions to great effect. Light shimmers from each portal and from the vases gentle slopes & mouthrim. The result was the fusion of more traditional Czech enamelling effects with a strongle modern innovative twist. The vase is very very feminine whereby it would either grace any delicate flower arrangement & equally stand alone as a piece of innovative stunning early sixties artglass... in its own right.

CONDITION – SIZE – WEIGHT – MARKS

Condition of the vase is A1 perfect with no chips, dents, cracks, abrasions, nibbles, scratches or water damage at all . The piece measures 5 ” ( 13 cms ) in diameter by 4.25 " ( 10.8 cms ) in height and weighs in at 326 gms. exactly. The vase displays no signs of wear or scratches around its base whereby the piece has never been used and only displayed.
