This is such an excellent little camera.I use it mainly to take short videos of my workshops as I train as a therapist, although it's great as a stills camera and for general day-to-day use too. The size is small enough to fit in my pocket; it's not too heavy but feels really robust and it's really easy to use in Automatic mode. There are lots of other settings which I use very occasionally but most of time it really is "point and shoot" Very good price from the Canon outlet and so really good value for money.
I bought this camera to replace a canon ixus 130,which to be fair is a good little point and shoot but with limitations. The features i wanted were the hd video mode and a better zoom. The ixus 1000 delivers both these features. The results so far have been very good but there are problems. On maximum zoom it seems to get its knickers in a twist at times going in and out of focus but press the shutter button halfway down seems to help it focus a little better.Unfortunately this can take a second or two by which time the moment has gone.On no or low zoom(3-5 times it seems fine).HD video mode i find is very good and i have had very pleasing results although once again if you are on high zoom focus tends to drift a little. The colors on the printed photo are outstanding. If you want a simple point and shoot or want to play with the settings trying out the features this camera will deliver. The biggest problem with this camera is battery life, its nothing short of abysmal.I get 70-80 shots before battery expires. This can be solved very easily by buying a spare battery from e-bay for £5.00 or so(you really do need a spare).Overall the camera has pleased me with the results so far.As a simple point and shoot on auto setting and getting a bit of video of the kids or pets or whatever it very good indeed. Also search for best price the range is from £300 or so to the £80 i paid for mine.Would i recommend it,yes if you want a simple to use camera with very acceptable results.DO buy a spare battery you WILL need it.You will also need a high speed sd card,so reckon on spending £20 on a battery and card.I bought a 16GB card which gives you ample photo needs and about one hour of HD video.Read full review
