Had a few problems installing it and chose to have it hard-wired rather than wireless. Once installed I found it to produce good colours and good definition with photos but not, in my view, excellent definition. However, good enough for what I want. Copying and scanning is quick and easy with the flip up screen - click on what you want and a few moments later, out it pops. Negatives: takes a bit of a while to start up from power on. Photo paper has to go in the back drop-down slot, so takes up desk space. Positives: separate inks are cheaper than All-in-One. Duplex printing saves paper. All in all, recommended for home use.
I bought this model of printer some ten years ago and had trouble free use from it till recently when it decided not to print in black anymore. After various attempts to solve the problem I came to the conclusion to purchase a new one. I was quite surprised to learn that the price has rocketed from £105 when I bought it to about £455. That's when I chose to buy a refurbished one. Keeping with what I know, I decided on another Pixma 5250. Additionally, my computer was already setup for that model from the previous one so all I had to do was plug in the replacement and carry on without go through another installation. I have to say, so far, so good. It still ticks all the boxes as a good, all-round smart little tool that prints, scans and copys with other facilities that I haven't tried yet - all for a third of the price of a new one. I had to get a new printer because my old one packed up after a good five and a half years (which I suppose it pretty good going!). It wasn't used that much, but I was sad to see it go because it was the best multifunction printer I ever had (Canon MP600), when it worked it was great, although a little slow on start up, and I hate having to throw things out, but it wasn't worth having it fixed because it would have cost more to repair than buying a new printer! Anyway I wanted a printer with all the same features, plus I thought "wi fi" was a good idea since I have a couple of computers, and then i knew I could use both with it. I made sure that it would be compatible with the operating systems on both my old laptop and my new desktop machines, and I wanted the CD/DVD label function I had on my old Canon machine, because it's useful, even though I don't use it that much. On first inspection, the MG5250 seems a little flimsy compared to the old one. I'm not a fan of the relatively cheap black plastic they use now, and shiny black finish is not good as it can get covered in fingerprints, really easily! It's not as heavy as my old Canon, and has a smaller "footprint", so that is definitely a plus! I can see I'll have to be careful with the door on the front as it is pretty flimsy, but I'm careful with my stuff, and I won't be using it a lot so I can live with that. The MG5250 "wi fi" feature is fairly straightforward to set up, but I had to mess around with it, to get it to see the 2 different computers. It took me a while to discover that I had to change settings on the front panel to get it to see each computer seperately, but that's probably because I have to get use to the layout of the menus and the software, and I hate looking at the manuals! I managed it eventually, and everything seems to be working fine now. Unfortunately, like my old Canon, it seems to take ages to "warm up" before it prints anything when you first turn it on. I really wish there were a way to set it up with a "quick start", but I don't think there is. "Black marks" for that, because apart from that, print quality is excellent, and the machine is pretty quiet, so I'm happy with that. The problem with all ink jet printers is the price of ink, and I know that this machine has a function where it cleans the heads everytime you use the machine, which uses up the ink more than it needs to. I'm not really happy about that, as ink is expensive, but there were extra ink cartridges in the box with this one, so I shouldn't need to buy more ink for some time yet! Anyway, I got this machine reconditioned, and it looks brand new, so all in all I'm very pleased with how it works, and the print quality, which is all important. I wanted a good "mid range" multifunctional inkjet, and all in all, I think I got what I wanted. It's looking good so far! I love to get a bargain, and I think that I got one with this machine. If it lasts me only the same time as the last one did, then I'd still be happy, especially if I could get another one at a similar price.Read full review
I bought this printer after studying several other reviews, including the Which? guide. Canon scored very well on running costs and print quality, and I would agree with that. It's very straightforward to set up with a computer, and the operation of it is instinctive and easy, so that it doesn't take long to learn what to do. The manual tells you, but it's also pretty easy to find out for yourself by pressing buttons! The first copy takes nearly a minute, but after that it's very quick. Copying and scanning are both good, and I like the fact that there is a memory stick port for data transfer. I got it to replace a ten year old printer that had died, and it shows how much things hae moved on since then. I would certainly recommend it, especially at the price I paid, which was well below RRP on Ebay.Read full review
Nice machine. Once we got it working (not the manufacturers fault), our router is connection only not wireless, it worked great. So far no problems. Easy to use. Inks are cheap if you shop around. Time is always the factor with printers - will it still work in 16 months?, I can't answer that. I have the earlier model at home that works great, and so far this one is A1. We find it easy to use, and it does everything. This one is at work, mainly for small amounts of colour work. Can't fault it.
