I love Carlito's Way. I bought it to add to my collection of Pacino DVD's, and the fact that it is a genuinely well made, well acted film, with a good plot and quite exciting. It's also moving, what you'd expect from Brian de Palma. And if you liked Scarface - you'll like this movie. :-) Oh and Pacino LOOKS good too! He also has an immensely likeable character. Buy it!
Al Pacino, Sean Penn, Penelope Ann Miller, Luis Guzman, Viggo Mortensen, John Leguizamo, Paul Mazursky Though not quite as memorable as his earlier gangster effort "Scarface", and obviously not a shade on "The Godfather" series, Al Pacino’s "Carlito’s Way" is still one of the versatile thespian’s finest hours. Ticking with suspense, immersed with drama and blistering with brilliant performances, Way whacks Pacino into the trousers of Carlito Brigante, a former NYC drug kingpin whose sprung from prison by his devious, curly-haired attorney (Sean Penn, looking ever so lovely, ladies). Now that he’s out, Brigante’s promised to go straight – he’ll still be dealing, just cars, this time running a car rental agency on an island. Unfortunately, Brigante’s old friends and business partners aren’t going to make it easy for them. They’re not convinced he’s over his fasination with pills and popping-off-guys, and don’t for a minute assume he’s serious about going legit. The only person rooting for a clean Carlito is his ex-girlfriend, a dancer, played by Penelope Ann Miller. It’s not spoiling anything by saying that Brigante doesn’t achieve his dream – after all, the movie opens with his assassination - but that doesn’t mean you don’t end up hoping, in the films last minutes, that there’s a scene where a brilliant doctor steps onto the platform where he’s killed and miraculously puts him back together. A memorable movie with another standout performance by one of today’s finest actors, "Carlito’s Way" is as gripping as it is gruelling – thanks to writer David Koepp’s top-notch script - and every minute of it is pure ‘butter’. Audio and video wise, this looks a treat. The colours are spot-on, there’s more detail than a signwriter’s panel van, and the sound is perfect – without being too overbearing - for a couple of wall-aligned woofers. Extras-wise, there’s a half-hour documentary on the difficulties of transferring the books the film was based upon to the screen, which is good stuff, and also – some photos, some behind-the-scenes footage, the trailer, and a few previews for other Universal titles.Read full review
