Lea Thompson's break through role was as Marty McFly's mother in 'Back to the future' this lead to her role in 'Caroline in the city'. It is a gentle unassumming comedy, which is much harder and cleverer to write than the rather crude British sitcom we enjure today. The se up is this Caroline is a perky and positive cartoonist and Ricard (Malcolm Gets) is a morose 'suffering' artist who colours Caroline strip to pay the rent; add in a neighbour who's an actress, a kooky mail boy and her former boyfriend who is now Caroline's boss. Season two starts with Richard declaring his feeling for Caroline (although she doesn't know) and ends with Caroline declaring her feelings for Richard (although he doesn't know). Comedies of that time were overshadowed by Fraser and Friends, if it were produced today it would be hailed as a return of a good channel four import. The series comes on three discs with only a phote gallery as extras, all the actors having moved on. The interesting thing about watching thses 'old' sitcom is finding actors taking bit parts who went on to become major characters in other shows. David Hyde White makes a cameo appearance ( but not as Nylea Crane0 in one of this seasons episodes.Read full review
They definately do not write comedies like Seinfeld, Frasier or friends any more so for a feel of these types of style you need to go back to the nineties and watch some of the less known sitcoms. Caroline in the city is a 4 season comedy with an unknown cast but boasts plenty of laughs. Season two sees the tension grow between Richard and Caroline as it did between Ross and Rachel in Friends and Niles and Daphne in Frasier. It follows on nicely as season one is left on a cliff hanger and is probably the best of the seasons as the writing is still fresh and characters already established. Also you will be treated to some great guest appearances from other soap stars as seen in season one. You should watch the seasons in succession and see the storyline play-out and even though four was a tired season you would be ready to forgive the already loved characters. IGMRead full review
