This movie was way, way better than I thought it would be, only spoilt, as ever, by the wooden acting of Judi Dench.

Daniel Craig is a tough two-fisted Bond in the first proper movie version of Ian Fleming's first novel, "Casino Royale." The action is potent and punchy, and the performances very solid. Fans of the book will love the little details (like the man with the eye patch) and the adherence to much of Fleming's 53-year-old dialogue. Craig is an energetic addition to the series, a "human" Bond who you want to root for--not the snide tourist of Roger Moore or the suave pitchman of Pierce Brosnan. Eva Green plays a complex character as Vesper Lynd--when she shows up in the black velvet dress (straight out of the book, like much of this movie) I felt like cheering. Mads Mikkelsen is an appropriately creepy Le Chiffre, with an effeminate quality that is also based very closely on Fleming. He is a vicious sadist, a coward, and a weakling--not the usual egomaniacal industrialist surrounded by thugs in color-coordinated jumpsuits. "Casino Royale" has a great, completely original title sequence, a tough muscular score by series regular David Arnold. and a strong theme song from Soundgarden/Audioslave front-man Chris Cornell. The film is just what the series needed.Read full review
The uproar, the shock, the anger, the hate grouped that formed on the internet.... why????? All because the producers have hired Daniel Craig as the new James Bond. We have now lost the 40 year image of James Bond in his smooth, calm, collective look with charms that no woman on earth could resist. So what does Daniel Craig bring to the role. Well, by going back to the very first novel he has launched the franchise into a new 21st Century image. This is a strange concept. After so many years of Bond, we are officially going to have a prequel, establish why Bond is Bond, why he is a womaniser, where he ruthless streak to kill comes from and why his character has alot of anger inside. The films starts right at the beginning, a rookie spy who has yet to earn his "00" status and is still learning the game. Daniel Craig is superb in his role particularly when he is struggling to deal with his emotions and begins to learn why life in the secret service is really all about. From start to finish you will have a rollacoaster of emotions as our hero is double crossed, tricked and comes close to never making his 007 status. What this films bring you is a true spy film, back to the classic bonds of the 1970's and loses the special effects that ruined Die Another Day but gives you in a return one of the finest actors to grace the movie world who will continue to take Bond to a new and higher level in each film he commits too.Read full review
Having owned this flm in normal dvd format I think Daniel Craig is really refreshing as Bond. He has brought an excellent clarity to the bond role which brings it in line with his character in the books. With a dark and sinister side to Bond he has opened the roll of bond up to alsorts of new dangers and exciting situations. People must see this film in blue ray to experience the Bond package as it was meant to be.
