This is my favourite of all Catherine Cookson's, I have seen nearly all Catherine Cookson films based on her books this is the first one I watched and have been hooked ever since, the story is exciting you get a feel of how life was such a struggle in times gone by and Tilly Trotter is such a deserving heroine, Tilly is such a strong character, she deserves to be loved and respected for the type of person she is, I won't give to much away, but this made for tv film if you want drama, gritty story line, forbidden romances/relationships between social class this is for you, you won't be disappointed. Also I would recommend: THE TIDE OF LIFE THE DWELLING PLACE DINNER OF HERBS THE GLASS VIRGIN THE RAG NYMPH THE CINDER PATH THE WINGLESS BIRD One of my ancestors was a women in service to a well to do family, and we come from the North East, and she fell in love with the son of the family and their relationship was definately not approved of and he was disowned by his family and left with nothing because he would not give her up, so this behaviour did happen and so true to form and can be related to. but in Catherine Cookson's novels they tend to have happy endings.Read full review
