This is a copy of the fourth edition of Claret's Ritual by George Claret, dating from before 1850.
George Claret was a significant figure in the development of the Emulation Ritual and copies of this book are rare.
The book has board covers decorated with gilt. The book is about 4" x 5" and 278 pages. The pages are gilt edged. It is complete but shows the 160+ years age of what appears to be a well-used book. One page is detached but is present. There are pencil marks throughout that look to be very old. Some pages are dog-eared, there is some foxing, there are splits and tears. None of these detract from the contents which are a complete and a now historic record of Emulation in the years post-1813.
The front inside board has in ink the name "W H Prince P P S G D, E L, 1861".
The contents are: Opening; Closing; Questions before Passing; Questions before Raising; Ceremony at Initiation; Prayer at Initiation; Obligation at Initiation; First Tracing Board; Charge at Initiation; Ceremony of Passing; Prayer at Passing; Obligation at Passing; Second Tracing Board; Ceremony of Raising; Prayer at Raising; Obligation at Raising; Exhortation; The Charge; Third Tracing Board; Installation of the W M and Officers; Prayer; Address; First Lecture; Second Lecture; Third Lecture; Call from Labor; Call to Labor; General Remarks.
There are three illustrations at the beginning of the book showing the correct method of advancing to the E.
Throughout there are references to the old charges.
