I hit an steel alignment rod with my Taylormade R7 425 and managed to put a hole in it. I didn't think i would be able to find a "NEW" driver to replace my old tried and true R7, I am a firm believer in "Just because it's new doesn't mean it is better",but i figured there had to be a better driver out there than my R7 that would allow me to take advantage of the years of development between my R7 and the drivers of today.I had tried my friends R-11 and didn't like it, i had tried the new Titleist and didn't hit it any further than my R7.I have always liked the look of 290 Classic and when I saw how cheap they are on ebay, especially compared to the two drivers I have already mentioned, i thought i would give it a try.The first time i hit it went farther than any drive I have ever hit and straight as an arrow with a beautiful trajectory. It is the most solid feeling driver I have ever hit and the easier I swing the farther it goes. This club is advertised as being super light but it feels just right , not too light or too heavy. The head looks nice and small at address, very similar to my R7. The only drawback I can see is that the club is so beautiful I don't want to hit it for fear of scratching it.This is the first Cleveland product i have ever owned i hope the quality is as good as my old Taylormade, that R7 looked great and performed well for a long time.Read full review
After a 4 year layoff from golf after surgery and a few relocations, I am back playing golf. My first order of business after playing a round or two to make sure I could still play was to get a new driver. I found the Cleveland Classic 290 sort of by accident as I was looking for Calloway and TaylorMade clubs, but fell in love with it immediately. The design is simply gorgeous, especially for someone my age (43) who loves everything throwback. Even the headcover is retro. Compared to the gaudy and ridiculous looking drivers out there right now, this club is a very welcome sight. I have been using a very good Calloway titanium driver (9.5 degree) for the last several years, and this Cleveland driver shares one awesome trait with my previous driver; a simple, clean, and plain top that doesn't distract you when you look down at your ball. The gold sweet spot indicator makes it even easier to line up your shot. The club feels terrific to swing, and even better through the ball. Not clunky at all. Speaking of golf balls, mine went a long way when I hit it. No club will make you hit the ball straight, but this one gave me a lot more confidence over the ball, and I hit it pretty good each time during my first round with it. Handicap = 17 Average Drive before purchase = 260-270 Yards added with this driver = 10 or so Bottom line; no one could convince me to spend $400 on a new Calloway or TaylorMade driver when this awesome club is several bills less and just as good.Read full review
This club is beautiful to look at with it's persimmon shape and color, and the gold inlay on the face. But it's not too old school retro looking because of the actual size. Apparently the bulk that it boasts makes it taller instead of longer toward the back. The result is confidence over the ball. You look down at it and you know you are aligned just right because of the inlay, you know there is some serious weaponry here because of the heft, yet it looks entirely controllable because it is not such a huge footprint as other comparable models. The fact is that it really does spank the ball sweetly with a nice sound and does perform with a great degree of control. Let me just finish with this thought I bought the 12 degree and found out I could even hit it off the fairway, so I also bought the 9 degree for even more tee ball distance, and still carry the 12 degree as a latter day 2 wood or for maximum tee ball control. Seriously you cannot go wrong with this club, and it was only made in this wood color design for 1 or 2 years (around 2013).Read full review
This club is beautiful. So nice that I am reluctant to use it on course and scratch it. Brought it to the range and tested it. Although this club is light, it is not so light (like the Cleveland XL 270) that it is hard to control. The weight is just nice and it gives me confidence to drive the ball. After hitting a few shots, I can that it is definitely easy to launch with loads of forgiveness on mishits. I would not say that there is increased distance but surely tighter dispersion. Ball flight was just high enough and straight. As the face is deep, you have to tee the ball up higher. Overall, an easy and pleasant-to-swing driver that promotes confidence with the lighter weight and deeper face. No regrets getting this club, even if just to hang on the wall.
i've been a user of cleveland clubs for about 10 years, so i will admit i'm probably biased...but...i bought this to replace a callaway i had for golf at our winter home. i've been to the range twice and played one round since receiving this beauty. the sweet-spot is HUGE! a hit anywhere on the clubface will get out there, but a hit 'on the screws'? OMG! with this my normal shot is arrow straight, run included 270 is easy. my mishits are from over-swinging - shots high and right, but i think that is a matter of getting used to the 8,7,2,2 shaft. all this and more for $140? can't be beat!!
