I bought this on the strength of their previous release "Blue cathedral". Although you can still tell "Avatar" is a "Comets on Fire" album, its quite a shock to hear how quickly they've moved on. Gone is the ear splitting distortion (well... relegated to the background anyway)and muddy sound, and not a reverberating vocal in sight. They havent totally cleaned up there act though. Despite parts of the album being fairly relaxed and sometimes melancholic, every track builds to become very intense at some points, with waves of distortion added to compliment the keyboards and guitars. Although this wasnt the album I expected from these guys it was a very welcome surprise indeed. They've matured hugely, the songs are well structured and every member of the band puts in an excellent performance. The drums roll around all over the place and the guitarists handle the many transitions from bluesy twangle to unbelievably intense, high pitched wailing with total precicion, and the improvement we see in the vocal performance on this album - compared to the last - is absolutely astounding!! Although I would say that with all this growing up they've been doing lately, they have lost some of the crazy, balls out, funny intensity that originally attrected me to them, but this easily forgiven considering what they've become! For me this is one of the best albums to be released this year, wether it be within Prog, or Psychedelic Rock or whatever else you'd like to call it, this album comes up trumps. Its not startlingly original, infact musically speaking it could be 20 years old but its good music all the same. 8.5 out of 10Read full review
This is a cracker of an LP. It recieved rave reviews and deservedly so. The guitar sound alone is worth the cost of the disc! The album features a definate 70's slant, the vocals are at times reminiscent of the great Steve Marriot. A fried Lynard Skynard and a toasted Allman Bros are other good points of reference. Just imagine these bands in their pomp, with Space Echo and distortion layed over, and you're getting somewhere close. Unpredictable, un-pigeonhole-able (despite earlier comparisons) and unbelievably beautiful. I've bought this bad boy twice on ebay now because I lost my first copy! Do yrself a favour. Ya won't be dissappointed, promise.
