CONQUEST - 1066 THE YEAR OF DESTINY Stewart Binns With the huge expansion of interest in the historical novel that exists at present it was probably only a matter of time before the legendary English hero, Hereward (later known as The Wake) came under the spotlight and two new novels based on this character are now on the bookshop shelves. Mr. Binns' novel CONQUEST makes no pretence that this book is anything other than fiction, although he has made a really sincere attempt to make the historical background generally accurate and realistic and has included a postscript of historical notes and references, several very useful and quite accurate maps, and genealogy tables. The central character, Hereward of Bourne, is given a full mostly fictional life history and in the style of many storybook heroes becomes central to the historical events of the period. Never the less the tale does quite accurately depict the political atmosphere in England following the Norman conquest and is packed full of action and intrigue. A very enjoyable, stirring read after the style of Bernard Cornwell, worth reading and keeping, I look forward to Mr Binns next novel. What a shame this is another book that has been published straight into paperback edition.Read full review
