COWBOYS AND ALIENS Jon Favreau (Deep Impact & Iron Man series) 2011 *** Entertaining little film, half cowboy flic/half sc-fi. Kind of bordering on the politically correct, as there are lots of slobs and weak men who boast macho exteriors, and quiet macho men possessing descent interiors, and where young boys, dogs and women are all very sympathetic. In fact the saviour in the film, and the human race (a good alien, Olivia Wilde ) is a woman. But the main plot orbits around Daniel Craig, an anti-hero in the Clint Eastwood mould, yet with a much better bum. He is an amnesiac who has a futuristic bracelet on his wrist. Though he doesn’t know who or what he is, he does possess a clear sense of justice as he rides into a frontier town and trips over the good, the bad and the ugly. However almost immediately the town is an attacked by Aliens in flying saucers. Though Jake (Daniel Craig), fights the Aliens off with the rest of the town, and in doing so discovers the power of his bracelet, he is not interested in pursuing anything other than his own goal, which is to recover his lost (forgotten) love. However he is pursued and embroiled by the townsfolk and, as his memory slowly returns, he discovers he is the leader of a group of gangsters. The 2nd half of the film is devoted to fighting off the brutal race of green- blooded Aliens who have a buried their mother-ship in the desert and are prospecting earth’s gold whilst simultaneously abducting locals. We learn that once the aliens return to their home planet they will return in force & rip all the gold from the earth’s crust and destroy us in the process. But with the aid of Jake who unites all the townsfolk, outlaws and American Indians, and the self-sacrificing Ella(the female Alien), the humans prevail and the aliens are blown to smithereens. All this section is a bit silly really: the aliens are ruthless and all but invisible killers, yet our 30 heroic humans, go on and on, a bit like the parable of the loaves and fishes, and 30 seems to turn into three thousand, and no matter how many are killed the humans still seem to hang on in there. And of course D Craig, no matter how knocked about he is, is quite superhuman in his endurance skills and doesn’t even have to bother about the descending debris falling on his head from the exploding Alien ship. But hey, that’s all part of being invincible I guess.Read full review
