Great machine! This is my third Dell Dxxx model laptop. They have long been my favorite. No on board optical drive, but that is part of what makes it super portable without sacraficing screen or keybboard size. Be warned, unit does take a 1.8" ZIF sytle hard drive which is expensive to upgrade past 80GB. I bought a PCMCIA UDMA (high speed) Compact Flash adapter and a 128GB compact flash card for extra storage. Works like a charm and what else are you going to use the PCMCIA slot for? =) These Core 2 Duos will run Windows 7 and Window 8 reasonably fast. I'm an IT Director and a bit spoiled - but this machine keeps me happy. Options can include a finger print reader which also works fine with Win 7 and 8 (regardless of what forms posts claim, it works fine using AuthenTec True Suite. Battery performance is acceptable. 2.5 hours with the screen on full brightness during heavy use. Gigabit network port is great too. Typical options are standard, such as Bluetooth, Wifi and ports. Uses standard PA-10 or PA-12 adapter - laptop is capable of sensing adapter. (Most Dells are)Read full review
I was considering a tablet for traveling but came across the D420, bought it at less than 1/5th the price, and have been thrilled with its size, weight & performance ever since. This machine, with a 60GB hard drive and 1.5GB RAM is fast, boots quickly, and is efficient. Yes, it's a laptop but the battery gives me more than 6 hours, it's easy to handle, and like all Latitudes, it's built for rugged use.
Great for the money. Very slow processor speed though. Hard drive capacity and memory is somewhat limited. I added a new battery and an external CD/DVD drive. It is really great as a full featured Windows 7, light weight and easily transportable laptop. It will run for several hours on one charge.
The Dell D420 is a small portable computer with full sized performance. Netbooks have reduced functionality. This machine is small, like a netbook, but performs like a regular computer. The only drawback is they take specialized parts. The caddy and hard drive are rather expensive. Otherwise, a good machine.
I'd probably recommend getting a Core Duo next time but for what it is it surfs efficiently and well.
