Generally it's a very good camera. The picture is nice with nice colors. However it lacks the sound quality that you need when you mount it on a bike. Even with the external mic attached you don't get anything but wind noise when riding at 80kph or more. It also needs a good protector case since the camera lens is not interchangeable (no replacement lens available). External power from USB is an excellent feature. I'd love 60fps on HD ...
Firstly its not BROWN its Black and its called the Drift HD170 Stealth! I finally decided to buy a helmet camera, (something I've wanted for ages), for use on a possible motorcycle trip to Morocco in 2012. I looked all over Youtube and Ebay after much consideration I decided on the Drift HD170 Stealth because it met the following requirements: 1. Cost under £200, 2. Suitable for mounting on a motorbike. 3. Different mounting options. 4. A screen to view footage, menu and setup cam, 5. SD card compatible, 6. Remote control, 7. Accessories available. On to the camera. I've given it a couple of tests already and I must say' I'm quite impressed. Pictures a good and clear, the screen makes setting up easy as well as viewing what you've just recorded. Theres an easy to use menu too. Firmware can also be updated using downloads from the company website. I like the fact that you can swivel the lens so it doesn't really matter how you mount the camera. However you can't replace or change the lenses with this model, but you can on the new Drift HD, but its more expensive. Recordings are made to SDHC cards up to 32GB which can be copied directly to netbook/laptops, (useful say if your on a bike trip and need to free up the SD card). I have found that the optional long life battery lasts a lot longer than the standard battery 4hrs as opposed to 2hrs, (I've just ordered a second one). It also has a remote control which can be set up to operate 2 cameras simaltainiously. It records right up to 1080p in full HD. It has a night mode, photo mode with 5mp camera, and can be set to take time lapse photography, but I haven't tried these options yet. At 720p HD it can be set for 60fps to enable slow-motion footage. The camera has a built in microphone and the sensitivity of which can be adjusted in the menu. In the box you'll find a helmet mount, goggle mount and handle bar mount, theres a USB cable to connect to the computer for charging etc theres also a cable to connect directlt to your telly, a remote control with wrist strap and some velco for the mounts. So you get plenty of bits. The downside to this camera is that to attach the options like the external mic you have to open the rear door, this gives access to the socket, but leaves the rear door vunerable. They do however sell a rubber boot through which the cable passes and covers the rear door. But this is a minor issue. I also purchased a suction mount, this holds the camera to any flat surface even on the alluminium pannier of my bike, and is great for attaching to a window of a car. I have recently ordered the optional mains & 12v battery charger as I found that the batteries can take a while to charge via the computers USB connection. There are 2 variants of the Drift HD170, one is Black and orange and the more discreet version being the 'Stealth', the one I chose, which is all black. Drift sell loads of accessories such as external mics, cases, mounts, mains/12v chargers, long life batteries underwater cases, etc etc. Beware of cheap imitations!!! Including the cameras! To conclude this is a really good camera especially for the price, theres probably better out there if your willing to pay the extra for it, but this one ticked all the boxes and on seeing the results I'm very satisfied with my purchase. Checkout Youtube for plenty of videos using the Drift HD170, (when doing so remember to adjust the Youtube screen to 720p or 1080p for best results).Read full review
Excellent "rugged" camcorder can be used attached to almost anything has a wristwatch type remote the HD quality is superb, rotating front lens allows the camera to be rotated to any longditudinal angle and shoot upright videos fitting supplied to affix to helmets and a headband, cool for active sports such as kayaking, sky-diving,surfing, Motorcycling, & mountain biking and many others. I bought this to video rsadio cntrolled helicopters that I fly by myself with operators eye view and also my archery shooting. R0gbear
Bought this for my motorcycles, only used it so far on an old single cylinder Panther 250 and the vibration was apparent. It was still fantastic picture quality and the colours much deeper than my Panasonic Camcorder. The only suggestion I can make to give me a feeling of added security would be a small lug to be able to fit a lanyard just in case the Velcro or Vacuum fitting should fail and the camera tried to fall off the bike. I heartily recommend this camera and certainly would buy again.
My experience hopefully was not the norm as within a few days of using this camera, it broke. More specifically the small plastic clip which keeps the battery in place broke off which meant the battery no longer engaged to power the camera. Rather bizarrely though it broke whilst the camera was recording and not whilst removing or inserting the battery. Unfortunately I was on holiday at time but managed to find a work around which allowed me to carry on filming my experiences...I would have hated to have missed them. Other than that, I found the camera easy to use and even at 720 produced good quality video whihc has been commented on by friends. Now it just remains to be seen how easy it is to get a replacement camera (and how that fares).
