Daimler is Britain's longest surviving marque. From beginings in a German workshop in the early 1880s, the Daimler company grew to be one of the greastest of Britain's motor manufacturers between the wars. Lanchester, meanwhile, was the first all-British petrol-driven motor vehicle which was developed with virtually no accompanying publicity in 1894 by Frederick Lanchester, a pioneer motor engineer and inventor. Amalgamting in 1931, a tradition of excellence and innovation was continued until the takeover by Jaguar in 1960 and the marque is carefully marketed by Jaguar to this day. In this book a cast with rogues, royalty and the greatest of the century's motor engineers and businessmen has been assembled and the history of the two companies chronicled and analysed up to the takeover by Ford in 1989. This book should appeal to anyone with an interest in Britain's motoring heritage and contains much previously unpublished archive material.
